About this interactive
Monitoring software gets data from devices in two directions, as the lesson says: sometimes it goes and grabs the information, and sometimes the device pushes it.
Polling is the grab. The monitoring server asks each device for a value on its own schedule: CPU load every minute, memory every five minutes, the UPS battery level, the temperature in the closet. With SNMP, the server sends a request and the device answers.
An SNMP trap is the push. The device sends a message by itself, unasked, when something happens: a port goes down, the UPS switches to battery, a fan fails.
The video says that when SNMP is set up "we call them traps". Traps are only the device-initiated messages; the regular readings the monitor asks for are polling. Security+ lists SNMP traps among monitoring tools for exactly this push.
The lesson also covers WMI for Windows, SSH for Linux and application APIs, and agentless monitoring (nothing installed) against agents, which give more detailed data.
