About this interactive

The lesson's monitoring: - **ICMP (ping) monitoring:** pings each device on a schedule and alerts when one stops answering. - **Service monitoring:** asks a service such as HTTP or FTP to do its job: is the page there, does it say "healthy", how fast does it answer? Cloud monitors test from around the world. - **SNMP:** a manager pulls readings from devices, or devices send them: CPU, memory, disk, interface counters. - **NetFlow:** a router or firewall reports the flows crossing it (source, destination, port, volume), for performance and security. - **Syslog and log aggregation:** devices send their logs to a syslog server, and an aggregator such as Splunk lets you search them all and see a cascade of events in order. Packet capture and analytics, also in the lesson, are not bins: packet capture is the protocol analyzer's job, and analytics measures web visitors' experience rather than the network.

Key terms

Simple Network Management Protocol
SNMP
A protocol used to monitor and manage network devices such as routers, switches, and servers.
NetFlow
NetFlow is a Cisco network protocol that collects IP traffic flow metadata including source, destination, protocol, and byte counts, widely used in security operations for traffic analysis, anomaly detection, and incident investigation.
Log Aggregation
The process of collecting and centralizing log data from multiple systems into a single location for unified analysis and troubleshooting.
Syslog
Syslog is a standard protocol for forwarding log messages from network devices and systems to a centralized log server, forming the foundation of security log collection pipelines and SIEM data ingestion.
Internet Control Message Protocol
ICMP
A network layer protocol used to send error messages and operational information about network conditions.
