NetFlow, SNMP or Syslog?

Each card is a piece of monitoring data. Which protocol brings it in: NetFlow, SNMP or syslog?

⚑ Complete this interactive to capture a CTF flag worth 5 points.

About this interactive

The lesson admits the three overlap, then separates them by the kind of data each one carries. NetFlow summarizes traffic. It is not a packet capture: instead of every packet it records the flow of each conversation, who talked to whom, on which ports, when and how much. NetFlow is Cisco's; IPFIX is the non-proprietary version. SNMP pulls information about the device itself: CPU load, memory, temperature, battery charge, fan and power supply status. Collected over time, those readings give the trend lines the lesson mentions. Syslog carries event messages: something happened on a system, such as an admin signing in, antivirus finding a virus, or an application writing an error, and a log entry is created and shipped. So ask whether the data is about traffic between machines, about the state of one machine, or about something that happened.

Key terms

NetFlow
NetFlow is a Cisco network protocol that collects IP traffic flow metadata including source, destination, protocol, and byte counts, widely used in security operations for traffic analysis, anomaly detection, and incident investigation.
Simple Network Management Protocol
SNMP
A protocol used to monitor and manage network devices such as routers, switches, and servers.
Syslog
Syslog is a standard protocol for forwarding log messages from network devices and systems to a centralized log server, forming the foundation of security log collection pipelines and SIEM data ingestion.
Log Management
The process of collecting, storing, analyzing, and monitoring log data generated by systems and applications.
