About this interactive
The edge of the network is a prime location for security: everything going in or out passes through it. As firewalls got more advanced, vendors kept adding features there, and the box needed a new name. Unified threat management says it: many threat-management features unified in one device.
The lesson's list. The firewall controls traffic by address and port. Anti-malware finds viruses and other malicious code in what comes through. A VPN connects remote users and sites over encrypted tunnels. Intrusion prevention spots attack patterns and blocks them. Web content filtering stops people visiting sites they should not. Spam filtering keeps junk email out. Data loss prevention stops sensitive data leaving.
You could buy a separate device for each, but every extra box is another thing to manage. The UTM's advantage is one device at the edge doing all of it.
What you'll learn
- Identify which unified threat management feature handles an event: firewall, anti-malware, VPN, intrusion prevention, web content filtering, spam filtering or data loss prevention
- Explain the advantage of a UTM appliance: one device at the network edge does the work of many separate security devices, which would each have to be bought and managed
