Which Protection?

A virus, a probe from the internet, a stranger on your Wi-Fi: is it a job for antimalware, the network firewall or the host firewall?

About this interactive

Two demo lessons, three protections. Antimalware looks for malware: programs built to damage your machine, steal from it or use it. A virus is code inserted into other programs that does damage; ransomware encrypts your files and demands payment. Antimalware catches them as they arrive and finds them with a scan. On Windows the built-in virus and threat protection is now good; a second scanner such as Malwarebytes gives a second opinion. A network firewall sits at the edge of the network, where it meets the internet, and stops traffic from coming in unless it was called for. It protects every device behind it. A host firewall is software on the computer itself, such as Windows Defender Firewall, with rules that allow or block traffic for that machine. It protects the computer from threats already inside the local network, which the edge firewall never sees. Drag each threat to the protection that handles it, then check your answers.

Malware
Software specifically designed to disrupt, damage, or gain unauthorized access to a system.
Virus
Malicious code that attaches itself to legitimate programs and replicates when executed.
Ransomware
A type of malware that encrypts a victim's files and demands payment in exchange for the decryption key.
Firewall
A network security device that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing traffic based on predefined security rules.
Network-based Firewall
A firewall deployed at the network perimeter to monitor and control traffic flowing between networks or network segments.
Host-based Firewall
A software firewall installed directly on an individual computer that monitors and controls network traffic to and from that specific host. Host-based firewalls provide a layer of defense that persists even when a device leaves the corporate network.
