About this interactive
Sharing a folder makes it reachable from other computers on the same network. To open it from another Windows computer, the lesson opens Run (Start, type run, or the Windows key and R) and types a path:
\\192.168.4.91\file share
- Two backslashes first, then the computer that holds the share: its IP address or its computer name.
- A backslash, then the share name. Leave the share name off and Windows lists every share on that computer instead.
- The drive letter (E:) stays on that computer. Across the network you name the computer and the share, not the drive.
To find the address, run ipconfig at the command prompt on the computer that holds the share. Its IPv4 Address line is that computer. The Default Gateway line is the router, which holds no shares.
Windows then asks you to sign in with an account that exists on the computer holding the share.
Type paths exactly, with backslashes and no backslash at the end. Capital letters do not matter to the checker.
