About this interactive
After an incident, such as ransomware that encrypts data, the data has to be restored. Two objectives set what is acceptable, and each has a price.
The recovery point objective (RPO) is how much data the business is willing to lose, measured in time. An RPO of 15 minutes means a copy has to be taken at least every 15 minutes, so the RPO sets backup frequency. The lesson's costs of a short RPO: storage to hold all those copies, processing power to take them, and bandwidth to move them.
The recovery time objective (RTO) is how long restoring can take before the system has to be running again. The lesson's costs of a short RTO are about being ready: extra people on staff, available to restore at once, and restores studied and practised so they go fast. A longer RTO needs less of both.
A quick test for a card: does the money go into taking copies more often (RPO), or into getting a restore done sooner (RTO)?
The two are set separately for each resource, and neither has to be longer than the other.
