About this interactive
What you are doing: deciding, one feature at a time, whether it comes from the operating system or from the application you are using.
The lesson's rule: the operating system is the set of instructions that boots first and gets the computer running, gives you the environment you work in, and makes programs consistent. WordPad and Notepad have very different File menus, but the same Save As window and the same close and maximize buttons, because those come from the operating system. Most applications also reach the hardware, the drive, the printer, the speakers or the webcam, through the operating system rather than directly. The application does its own task with its own tools: a word processor formats a letter, Paint draws, Solitaire deals the cards.
How to use it: ask whether the feature is the program's own task, or something the program gets from the system underneath. A wrong answer resets your streak and shows the right bin; land five in a row to finish.
