About this interactive

The Vendor Assessment lesson ends with three risks to look for before you sign. A conflict of interest is when the vendor's interest and yours do not line up. The lesson's vendor example is a provider that evaluates whether you need a service it also sells: it has a stake in the answer being yes. A relative hired under a manager who can promote them, and a credit card company giving financial advice, are the lesson's other examples. Look for who gains from the advice or the decision. Vendor lock-in is being stuck with a vendor because moving away would be very difficult or very costly. You still have the service; you just cannot leave it easily. The lesson's example is an infrastructure built on one cloud provider's own services, so moving to another provider would be a rebuild. Vendor lockout is losing access to what you have with the vendor. The lesson's example is a missed bill: the provider says you no longer get your documents, software or data. Lockout is the door shutting; lock-in is the door open but too costly to walk through. A quick test for each card: does someone gain from steering you, can you not afford to leave, or can you no longer get in?
