About this interactive
The Configuration and Change Management lesson calls change management one of the best things you can do for a company: a documented process brings consistency, fewer errors, less downtime and better communication with the people a change affects. Its cost is a change to people's workflow, so the process is rightsized to the team and company.
The general process has six steps.
Change request: a customer, user or stakeholder asks for a change.
Planning: work out what the request means and how it will be rolled out.
Evaluation: someone double-checks the change before it goes ahead: that it suits the environment, will not cause issues and follows policy. Rightsized, this is one reviewer, a code review, or a full change advisory board (CAB).
Implementation: once approved, the change is made.
Monitoring: watch that it had the effect intended.
Change closure: close out the paperwork, make sure the communication has happened, and finish.
Communication and documentation run through every step. This activity follows one change, a VPN client upgrade, through all six.
