About this interactive
Quantitative risk analysis prices risk in dollars, so it needs to know what things are worth. The lesson gives two measures.
Asset value (AV) is the value of the asset itself. For tracked assets it starts at the purchase price and is depreciated: the lesson's method takes the purchase price and spreads it evenly over a set number of years. A $36,000 server depreciated over 3 years loses $12,000 a year, so after 2 years its book value is $36,000 − $24,000 = $12,000.
Total cost of ownership (TCO) adds every cost of having the asset over a period, often 3 years:
- purchase: the asset value
- deployment: the people and licensing it takes to roll it out
- operating costs: power, heating and cooling
- ongoing maintenance: patching and support
- training and process changes that come with it
One-time costs are counted once; yearly costs are multiplied by the years. Purchase $30,000, deployment $6,000, operating $4,000 a year and maintenance $5,000 a year come to $30,000 + $6,000 + 3 × $9,000 = $63,000 over 3 years.
The lesson's point: asset value alone understates what an asset costs the company.
