SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response) is software designed to streamline and manage the incident response process by coordinating communication, automating repetitive tasks, and centralizing data analysis across security tools and teams.
SOAR in Incident Response
Doing incident response is very stressful. It's a very stressful time because there's a lot going on. There's a lot to manage, a lot to troubleshoot. And one thing that can really help us out is having a good incident response plan, something that outlines exactly what we're supposed to do. But even better yet is some software that helps us manage incident response. That's what a SOAR does: a security orchestration, automation and response.
Security orchestration, automation and response, or SOAR, is software that can help us manage our incident response process.
To really understand what SOAR is, we can break it down into, well, what is orchestration? Orchestration is planning and coordinating. So really this software helps us plan and coordinate everything that happens when it comes to incident response.
What I mean by that is we have customer support, we have incident response managers, we have technicians that are researching this issue, we've got stakeholders that we need to communicate to, we've got customers and users that we need to communicate to. We've got all these orchestrations, all these things that we have to coordinate with. Well, this software helps with that communication: being able to communicate out, and who do we need to communicate to, and how do we communicate, and what do we communicate? Well, it orchestrates all of this.
We create workflows within this SOAR that help us understand when it is and what it is that we need to do. So if we need to communicate at certain points in time, it will flag that to let us know that this needs to happen.
It also helps us out with automating certain tasks, making something automatic, and so the SOAR helps us do this.
So an example of automation might be that we need to have a step where we need to escalate and communicate things out that we are escalating this. And so if we had to do this manually, maybe we have to text a bunch of people, send out an email, maybe we have to go and verbally talk to them, or make a phone call or something to that effect. But in the software, what we could do is we could just trigger and say, "Okay, we're escalating this," and then immediately it's going to send out the communication and take those steps. So we can pick out certain parts of this where it's going to automate that process.
It also brings a lot of data into this process. So rather than going out to all of these systems to detect and monitor and analyze, it can bring it under this one piece of software here, and we can analyze it. So we can really do this whole process here all through this SOAR.
