Physical security is a foundational component of any comprehensive cybersecurity strategy, and overlooking it can undermine even the most rigorously hardened digital defenses. Network equipment such as switches may be locked down at the software level, but an attacker with direct physical access can bypass authentication entirely by exploiting built-in recovery boot processes, gaining full control without ever needing a password. This makes controlling who can physically reach core infrastructure just as important as controlling who can access it over the network. Access controls on physical spaces introduce their own vulnerabilities. Locked doors can be defeated through brute force or lock picking, a skill that requires minimal training and inexpensive tools widely available to the public. Electronic badge systems, while more sophisticated, are also susceptible to cloning attacks, allowing an adversary to replicate a valid credential and enter restricted areas without detection. Don't overlook physical access

Another thing that we must keep in mind, that we're just going to mention right now, is physical access. That is, we could protect ourselves in so many other ways, but if we don't guard the physical building and the equipment, that can be problematic as well. So don't overlook that.

Let's take a look at a couple of examples. If somebody were to have physical access — here's a switch right here — really, basically, if they had physical access to the switch, they could plug into it.

Another thing is that we probably have gone through all the trouble of locking down this piece of equipment and hardening it so that it's ultra secure. But there are ways to bypass that if we have physical access to this piece of equipment. There are ways that we could boot up without it going through its proper process, so that way we can gain access without a password — we don't need any password at all. This is a mechanism for recovery of a switch in case we lock ourselves out of it. Therefore, what we need to do is physically be able to lock up this equipment and keep it safe. Otherwise people could get access to the core of our infrastructure.

Getting past a locked door

Just because we physically lock the door doesn't mean that it's completely safe. There could be a brute force attack. That's right, it applies here as well, where brute force would be just knocking the door down, just crushing whatever defenses there are and breaking in.

I also got a little lockpicking kit from Amazon — and I know a lot of security professionals that have done this — and I learned how to pick locks. So this is actually a fairly easy skill to pick up and learn.

Some access requires some sort of badge that you have to badge in with to get in and out, but these badges can be cloned. So that's another way that somebody could get into an access area where they're not supposed to be, is by cloning these badges.

What they can do once they are in

Once they have access to the equipment, they could be carrying out an adversary in the middle attack, or they could be just getting information and doing eavesdropping, or perhaps they're actually physically destructing the equipment, causing fires, unplugging things, causing damage to the heating and air conditioning, so that way all the equipment is going to fail at some point. So this can be very problematic, which is why we want to control the access to this equipment.
