Jamming is a great example of what a denial of service attack looks like.

When a computer is connected wirelessly into a network, there are waves going back and forth between some sort of wireless access point and this computer, and that connection allows it to connect to the rest of the network wirelessly. Jamming attempts to override those signals, degrading that signal or disconnecting it altogether, creating a denial of service attack against those wireless devices.

How the waves behave

Wireless essentially has an antenna that sends data from one device, and the other device has an antenna that receives it, and vice versa. These waves go through the air, transferring a signal from one device to the other. Even though these waves are electromagnetic waves, they behave very similar to waves in water, even though those waves are mechanical waves. So we can study waves in water and understand how these wireless networks work.

If you have just a single drop of water, it creates this nice clear, clean wave that goes through the water. But once you start getting multiple drops in the water, they start interfering with each other and it causes disruption. That's essentially what jamming is: it's causing disruption in these waves, so that signals can't get passed back and forth.

This can be done with any kind of waves. So Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, GPS, really any waves that go through the air, we can disrupt those waves.
