About this video

Vishing, short for voice phishing, is a social engineering attack that uses phone calls or voice messages to manipulate victims into revealing sensitive information. It operates on the same psychological principles as email phishing and SMS smishing, but leverages voice communication as the delivery channel, which can feel more personal and authoritative to the target. Attackers may leave prerecorded messages designed to create urgency or impersonate trusted organizations, or they may engage victims directly in live conversation to extract credentials, account details, or other confidential data. As phishing emails and fraudulent text messages have grown more widespread, user awareness of those threats has increased, reducing their overall effectiveness. Vishing represents an adaptation to that shift, exploiting a channel that many people still associate with legitimate communication. Attacks can be directed at individuals through personal cell phones and home landlines, or targeted at employees through business phone systems, making it a relevant threat across both personal and enterprise environments. Recognizing vishing as a distinct and active attack vector is an important component of a well-rounded security awareness posture.

Phishing and smishing are just not as effective as they used to be, because we're getting a ton of those. For me, I get a ton of phishing emails in my inbox, and I get a ton of text messages trying to trick me, trying to carry out some sort of scam. And so vishing is the next level of that. This is where it's actually using the phone or some sort of voice messages.

Vishing is attempting to trick a victim into disclosing sensitive data. It's the same as phishing or smishing, but it's through voice services. So maybe it's coming in through somebody's cell phone, or maybe it's coming in through somebody's landline, or maybe it's their business line, but they're getting some sort of voice message. And it could be through them actually leaving a voice message, or it could be actually getting them in person and the adversary is trying to trick the person over the phone.

So here's the attack card for vishing: attempting to trick the victim into disclosing sensitive data through voice services.
