Back in 1982, somebody snuck some cyanide pills into a Tylenol bottle, and then these bottles ended up being sold to the general public, and seven people ended up dying from those cyanide pills. So it was pretty devastating, and one of the reasons why that transpired, or happened that way, is that they didn't have any tamper detection.

So what they started to do was they started putting a plastic ring around the top that you would have to break that seal in order to open up the bottle. Or sometimes it's a seal once you open up the bottle, or sometimes it's even both. Whatever the case may be, there is some sort of detection. So nowadays when we buy something, there is something that notifies us if the bottle has been tampered with. That's tamper detection.

Where We Use Tamper Detection

There are several ways that we use tamper detection. One I know is in the cable box out in front of my house. They have a special connector on it, and you have to snap that connector off in order to gain access into the box. And so only somebody that has that special connector, that can put that back on, would be allowed to have access to that.

Or if you go to a store — I mentioned about the pill bottles and having them secure. Or another example might be technology. There's certain technology that we have that there will be some sort of seal on it, and as soon as you break that seal, then it says that the warranty is voided.

So there are several different mechanisms, several different ways that we can make sure that certain items have not been tampered with. And we use them to make sure, for safety for one — for something like a pill bottle, that no one has gotten into that pill bottle and put cyanide pills in it — but also for things like warranty, because they don't want you just to open up certain equipment and break the equipment and then claim that it was their fault. So that way they'll stop that by creating those little labels and stuff.

So tamper evident technology: there's a few different types of technologies out there and a few different ways of doing it, but essentially it's to understand if somebody has broken into or passed a certain line that they shouldn't have passed, before it's either sold or before it's turned in for some sort of warranty claim or whatever the case may be.
