Locking Equipment to an Area

There are times when we need to lock something down to a certain area. An example might be a laptop. Here's a laptop that I have, and there is a way we can do that: there's something called a Kensington lock, and we can lock equipment with it.

There's a little port right there, or what looks like a port. It actually looks like a USB-C port, but it's a little different — it's a little more square, and it actually is a different size. So it might look like a port at first glance, but it's actually a Kensington lock, which is a special lock that can go in there and lock this laptop. I've used it for things like projectors, and there's other equipment that will have the same little hole on it. It's designed to lock a computer down to an area.

How the Lock Works

Kensington, I believe, is a brand that's out there. It's just a few pins that go into there, and then one twist — you use a key to twist that.

I can tell you right now that this is not a great way to lock things up. It keeps honest people honest for the most part, but what somebody can do is go and just kind of crack it, and it comes right out. So for most equipment I wouldn't say that this is a very good way to lock it down, but it's better than nothing.
