Proper lighting is a critical component of physical security, enhancing video surveillance effectiveness and deterring criminal activity in vulnerable areas.
Physical Security Lighting
You could have great video surveillance, but if you don't have the proper lighting, it's not going to be able to pick up the information we need to pick up to take action on it. So lighting is a very important part. In fact, so much so that there are lighting engineers. I know of somebody who went to school for that, and whose whole career is based around being a lighting engineer.
It also acts as a great deterrent. Think about a parking garage. If somebody wants to do something that they shouldn't be doing, it makes it much less likely that they'll do it if the place is well lit. Bad things happen in dark places, and everybody knows that. So it's something that we really do need to focus on, and make sure that we have good lighting both to pick up things from a video perspective and to deter bad things from happening in these areas.
