Physical keys represent one of the oldest and most familiar forms of access control, and they remain a functional solution in certain limited contexts. For everyday personal use or securing low-value assets like filing cabinets or laptops, keys can serve their purpose adequately. However, their simplicity also makes them a weak link in security-conscious environments. In business settings, the risks associated with physical keys become more pronounced. Keys can be lost, stolen, or covertly duplicated, and none of these events necessarily trigger any visible indication that security has been compromised. Lock-picking is a learnable skill that requires minimal expertise, and tools like bump keys allow an attacker to defeat a wide range of standard lock mechanisms quickly and without specialized training. Some alternative key designs, such as magnetic keys, introduce their own vulnerabilities, including the possibility that a single key inadvertently grants access to multiple secured areas. For environments where controlling access to rooms, network closets, server rooms, or entire buildings is a priority, physical keys alone are generally not considered an adequate security control. More robust authentication methods, such as electronic access cards, PIN-based systems, or biometric readers, are better suited to meet the access control requirements of modern IT and business infrastructure.

Keys are another way that we can control access to something. These work great for something like your home, but for a lot of cases, keys are just not a great solution.

Here's a key to my home. This works out fine for my home, and I can think of several other cases where keys work just fine. But in a lot of cases, at least when it comes to businesses, they can be lost or stolen or duplicated. I've learned how to pick a lock, and it's not that difficult to do. There are special keys, like a bump key, that you can use to open up a lot of different types of locks. So they're just not a great solution in a lot of cases, but it is something that you can use.

Here's just one other example of a key that I have. It doesn't look like a key. It looks like an oversized dog tag, but it's actually a key. This uses magnets and you put it in a door, but this is a terrible key that I found, because it opens up more than one door. I find that that can be true with other keys, but it's even more true with this type of key.

So these are solutions in some cases, like if you're trying to have a locking cabinet, or if you have maybe a laptop that you're locking. But in a lot of cases, when you're controlling access into a room or into a network closet or to a building, I'm not a big fan of these.
