Did you know that data centers have camouflage? Data centers don't have camouflage in the sense of the military version, where it's all camouflaged in different types of greens and browns. But what they do have is that they fit in. They fit into their surroundings to blend in. Not all of them, but here is what that looks like.

Touring an unmarked building

One time I was invited to take a tour of a data center. They gave me the address of this building and they said, "You're not going to see any markings on it. What you're going to see is this is what the building looks like, but other than that, you can't tell it's a data center at all until you walk in." Sure enough, I showed up, I walked in, and it's completely a data center on the inside, but on the outside it doesn't look like that at all.

The reason is that they didn't want people to know this is a data center. They didn't want it to be known that this is a target, someplace that somebody might want to target. Instead, they wanted to keep a low profile.

They blend in, but they don't advertise

I find that's true with a lot of data centers. I live in an area that has a lot of data centers, and when you drive by them you start recognizing what they look like. Just by what is on the outside, and the overall perception from the outside, you can tell that they're data centers, but they don't advertise which data centers they are. People, or word on the street, you figure out who owns what data centers, but for the most part there are no big advertisements for them.

Most of what I've experienced is that you just walk up to this building that has no markings on it, you go in, and then there's lots of security once you get on the inside before you're ever able to actually go and see the rest of the data center. It's pretty fascinating. If you ever get a chance to go and tour a data center, I highly recommend it, because it's really interesting.
