Let's talk about something that's hot swappable and what hot swappable means. To do this, I'm going to take a look at a switch, and then we'll take a look at a server.

A redundant power supply on a switch

I'm going to give a little scenario here. Let's say on this switch one of my power supplies dies. There are two power supplies here, so it's redundant. Let's say one of these dies. That's great, we have another power supply, so we're still up and running.

But imagine now, when I go to replace this power supply, if I had to turn down the switch, pull the bad power supply out, put the new power supply in, and turn it back on. I still have downtime, and that can be problematic.

So some of this equipment is what's called hot swappable, which means that I can pull it out and replace it even if the equipment is up and running. So like these power supplies: if one of these power supplies dies, I can unplug it from the power, I can pull it out and replace it with a new power supply and put it back in, and then it's still up and running and I never have to shut it down. That's what hot swappable is.

Drives in a server

I've also got the server right here, because some of these drives here are mirrored, which means that they have duplicate data on them. If one of these drives dies, I could actually pull out the drive and then replace it, and it will then rebuild that drive and the drive will come back online without me having to tell it to do anything.

So some equipment is hot swappable. Some devices and some parts of the equipment are hot swappable and parts of it are not, so you need to know which parts are hot swappable and which ones are not.
