RTUs Alongside PLCs

Similar to a PLC, we have an RTU, or remote terminal unit.

In this scenario, let's say we have a factory floor and we have a SCADA controller right here. So a SCADA system that is delivering instructions to these right here, and these are either PLCs or RTUs. I mentioned PLCs are programmable logic controllers, and they are programmable logic controllers because we can program them to control the different pieces of equipment.

Well, there is this other type of controller here called RTUs. A remote terminal unit, or RTU, is very similar to a PLC. A PLC is designed to control equipment; same thing with a remote terminal unit. In fact, nowadays they're somewhat interchangeable. There is quite a bit of overlap between what RTUs do and what PLCs do. PLCs are designed to be a little bit more advanced, historically speaking at least; remote terminal units are a little more basic in their nature.

Where RTUs Are Used

Essentially, the key to where we use a remote terminal unit is when we're controlling equipment that is more remote. So in this case right here, we've got maybe some oil pumps, maybe some sort of oil refineries or something like that, where there are some processes that need to be controlled. Now we don't always have access to some central server, so this doesn't necessarily exist. So what we do is we program these now to control the equipment. So this is a remote terminal unit, which we can use out in the field to control equipment that's out there in the field.
