Since there are becoming more and more mobile devices, and we really need to control the security around those mobile devices, we need a solution. One of those solutions is mobile device management, or MDM.

Why we need it

There are more and more mobile devices that companies are having to support nowadays, and at the same time they're having to fall under stricter laws and regulations and compliance. So on both ends here, what's going to have to happen is that we're going to have to lock down these devices and figure out how we can control certain aspects of these devices.

For instance, how can we implement things like multifactor authentication? How can we make sure that these devices are patched, and that they're patching to the right patching repositories? How do we do things like remote wipe — if this phone gets lost, how can we remote wipe this? How can we do full disk encryption on these devices? How can we really control the DNS that is being used on this, and the applications that are being downloaded on these devices?

What MDM is

One of the answers to how we control this environment is mobile device management, or MDM. Mobile device management is both a strategy and software. There are software solutions to help secure mobile devices and manage them remotely.

These mobile devices are out and about, so how do we manage this? There are software solutions that we can go out there and purchase. Then we connect these phones, connect these laptops, connect these tablets, connect these mobile devices into this software to help manage them.

Sometimes these mobile device management solutions are meant for specific solutions, maybe like certain brands of phones, or maybe certain tablets, or maybe it's a solution that we can manage many of our devices on. Whatever the case may be, the idea is that we set up our policies and procedures and how we want to manage these different devices, and then we link these devices to that MDM.
