Providing remote network access has always involved a tradeoff between cost, speed, and security. Early approaches relied on dedicated leased lines to link branch offices to headquarters, or dial-up modem connections over the public telephone network for individual remote users. Both methods were expensive, slow, and offered limited security guarantees, making them difficult to scale as organizational needs grew. The widespread availability of broadband internet changed the economics of remote connectivity significantly. Internet connections are far cheaper and faster than legacy leased lines, and they support both site-to-site network linking and individual remote access for employees working from home, traveling, or connecting from public locations. The core challenge, however, shifted rather than disappeared — public internet infrastructure introduces serious risks around data confidentiality and integrity that organizations must actively mitigate. VPNs, or virtual private networks, are the primary solution to this problem, creating encrypted tunnels through public networks that keep traffic private and tamper-resistant. SD-WAN is a related approach that applies similar encryption and traffic management principles across wide-area network connections, often at enterprise scale. Remote desktop technologies offer another option, allowing users to interact with internal systems without transferring sensitive data across the connection itself. Together, these technologies form the foundation of secure remote access strategy in modern IT and network security practice.

Much of what we've talked about so far is getting direct access into that network. But in today's age, we need to give people remote access into our network. There are more and more people working from home, working out of office, and maybe they're traveling, that need access into the network. So how do we give them that access without compromising our network? Let's talk about that.

Connecting Networks in the Past

For a long time, we've needed to connect networks. So we had maybe a headquarters office and we were connecting a satellite office. In the past, what you've had to do is you'd have to rent a connection, and this could be very, very expensive, to rent these connections to make a connection between two of your sites. But that was the main option that you had.

Even if you were connecting remotely, the option was that you would use a plain old telephone system, or the POTS line, that you would dial in. What would happen is you would have a modem on your machine, and you would dial in to a bank of modems that would connect you to the rest of the network. So that's what we had for remote connectivity.

There's some problems with that scenario. One is it can be very expensive. Another is that it didn't guarantee security. Plus, the connection speeds were not great.

Connecting Over the Internet

So now what we have is we all have access to the internet, the cloud. And this is a great way to connect two different networks together, because the cost for each one of these lines to connect to the internet is a lot cheaper, and we get a lot faster connections nowadays. This is also a solution for our desktops and laptops to connect in from remote sites, from more remote users, people who are at coffee shops or people who are working from home.

The Security Problem and Its Solutions

The biggest problem is that these are public networks. So even though they're cheaper and faster lines than what we used to have, we still have the problem now with security. How do we make sure that the connection doesn't get viewed and we don't have confidentiality and integrity issues?

Well, there are a few solutions to that. One is we could use a VPN, a virtual private network. Or we could use some sort of SD-WAN connections, which actually implement some sort of VPN type technologies. Or we can use things like remote desktop connections to make those connections from the outside world or possibly between different sites.
