Before we get too involved in specific principles, let's first of all really understand what a principle is and how it applies to security architecting.

Where Design Requirements Come From

When we're architecting security and architecting our infrastructure, we really need to know: what are we architecting it to? What are our design requirements, and where do we pull those from? There are a bunch of best practices out there. There's a lot of security models. There's quite a few security principles that are out there, and so on and so forth. One that we're going to look at here is the security principles. What is it that we are going to use as our guidelines for developing our infrastructure, for developing our networks, for developing our security programs?

What a Principle Is

A principle is just a rule or belief governing one's behavior. So I have these set of principles that guide me into making decisions.

Just as a personal example, I may have a belief that if I collect more money, that could possibly lead to my happiness. Or I might have a guiding principle that I believe strongly in relationships and that can lead me to happiness. Or maybe it's some sort of experiences that I can gain that will lead me to happiness. And so I might have a particular focus, and I might work really hard on getting lots of money, or really hard on making sure that I maintain these relationships, or really hard on making sure that I'm getting the experiences that I need. So I have these guiding principles within me that give me drive and motivation, and measure up what I'm doing to see if I'm on track to what I believe is going to lead to my happiness.

Here's another example of a principle that we may have personally: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Some call this the golden rule. This allows us to measure up to see if we're meeting our principle — that is, that we are going to treat other people as we would want them to treat us. What this does, if everybody operated off of this, is it really extends kindness and grace and understanding to a lot of people. So we use this as a measurement to see, am I on track with extending kindness and grace to other people?

Applying This to Security Architecting

The same thing is true when it comes to security architecting principles: there are certain things that we have that are guidelines into creating secure networks, secure infrastructures. And I can tell you, sometimes those are off. There are core beliefs that we have, and what I mean by that is there's some outdated principles that are out there that are still being propelled forward as if this is what we should be doing. What we need to do is make sure that we understand exactly what the current principles are that we should be operating off of, and then use that current set of principles when we're applying it to our networks, to creating security within our infrastructure.

Now, I will say that there are a lot of principles that we could go over and cover, and I may add to this over time, but what we're going to do is cover some of the core basic ones when it comes to implementing security and making sure that we're architecting our infrastructures correctly.
