The platform offers several connection types, but the copper straight-through cable is the standard choice for connecting unlike devices across a network, such as a PC to a switch or a router to a switch. Manually selecting specific ports on each device, rather than using the automatic connection option, gives practitioners precise control over how the network is structured. Once devices are cabled together, Packet Tracer displays connection status through colored indicators at each link. A green triangle pointing upward signals an active, operational connection. Switch interfaces come up automatically by default, so a PC-to-switch link typically shows as active immediately. Router interfaces, however, are administratively shut down by default and must be explicitly enabled before a connection becomes live. To connect our different devices, I'm going to need a few devices on here. I've got the network devices router selected, and maybe I'm going to do a 2901, so I'll drag a 2901 out here. Perhaps I want a switch, so let's do a 2960 and pull a 2960 out here. And then I'll want an end device that I can connect, so I'm going to pull an end device out here.

Choosing a connection type

To connect these, I'm going to choose this connections run right here, and I can see different connections. The main ones we're going to use really are these first four here. This first one is an automatic choose selection, so I can just click on this and I click one device and then what device I want to connect to, and then it will automatically choose the type of connection that I want for this. But for the most part I don't really want it to automatically connect anything. I want to be very deliberate with what I connect. So if you notice what I just did there, I selected the delete and then I deleted that connection there.

A console cable is one of the things that we'll be using to connect devices, and I'll get more into that in another video. The copper straight through is going to be the primary thing that we're going to use to connect devices, and then there's going to be this crossover as well.

Connecting the PC to the switch

Let's take a look at this copper straight through and see what it looks like. I'm going to select that and I'm going to click the PC, and it's going to say, okay, what do you want to connect this straight through to: RS232, USB 0, USB 1 and Ethernet 0. Really this is an Ethernet cable, so we're going to connect to Ethernet 0, and we're going to select it to this switch right here. I'm going to click the switch and then I'll select which port I want to connect it to, and maybe I want to connect it to port 12. Now those two devices are connected.

Connecting the router to the switch

Maybe I want to connect the router to the switch. I'm going to once again select this, and go from the router. I'm going to select the 00 0 and go to the switch, and maybe I want this to be a faster connection, so I'm going to say Giga Ethernet 01. Now those two devices are connected.

Reading the link status

From a status point, I do see that these devices are connected between the PC and the switch, because I see a green triangle here and it's pointing up, so this connection right here is up and running. It's up and running because the switch is automatically configured to be up and running. But we see that this one is not up and running, because a router needs to be brought up. The interface is not automatically going to be up and running, so I would need to actually turn on the interface in order to have this connection.

If I made a mistake and I want to reconnect it to something else, I can click these status symbols to unconnect them and then reconnect them to a different port. So I'm able to go through here and connect them to where I want to connect them. Once again, for the most part, when we're interconnecting and creating our network diagram, we're going to be using this straight through cable.
