What Replication Is

One of the ways that we can safeguard our data is by replicating our data.

Quite simply, replication is creating a replica or a copy of something. But when we're talking about data replication, the big key with this is that it's going to constantly keep that second copy up to date. This is quite different than backup: when we back something up, we have a specific time and date that that backup is created, versus replication, which is going to continue to replicate or copy over all the changes. So whatever the destination is, it is going to have an exact copy of the original at any given time.

Replicating Across Sites

There are a lot of things that we replicate, not just data. But one of the cool things about replication of data is that we can do it across sites. Perhaps we have these two in completely different locations, and the data gets replicated either back and forth, or one directional replication.

What this allows us to do is have data in a whole other site. So if we were to have an incident at one site, we could bring our services back up and running with live data, because that data was replicated over.
