What a broadcast domain is

When a computer wants to speak to all devices on a network, what will happen is it will send out a broadcast that will reach all the machines. So this will happen within a broadcast domain. It is the router that stops the broadcast from going to the whole world, so it is not going to allow that communication to extend beyond this network right here. This is what is called a broadcast domain.

Counting the domains

Let's play a little game here. I want you to calculate how many broadcast domains you see here. We have four routers here, so see if you can guess how many broadcast domains there are, and count how many broadcast domains there are.

The answer is that there are six broadcast domains. We have one right here in this LAN. We have one right here in this LAN. And then we have four WAN connections here, so there are four more. So if we count that up, four plus the two LANs, it is six total. So there are six broadcast domains.
