A repeater is a Layer 1 network device that receives a degraded signal and regenerates it to extend the usable distance of a network connection. It operates at the physical layer, making it one of the most fundamental components in network infrastructure.

A repeater is one of the most basic forms of network communication that there is.
A repeater just acts as layer 1. What you're interconnecting together, rather than computers, you're probably interconnecting some sort of switch or router that you're interconnecting together, and you need to boost the signal to get more length out of it.
What happens is that these connections only have a certain distance that they can run, and after that they start degrading in their signal. How far it can run depends on what technology it is. Copper wire, Ethernet, can only be run about 100 meters, versus fiber can be run much further than that.
So what do we have here, and why do I say layer 1? We have some sort of signal that is being sent out on this wire. Let's say this is an Ethernet cable right here, and over the course of 100 meters it starts to degrade.
What I mean by that is that these are a series of ones and zeros here, and this is what the signal looks like: power on, power off, power on, power off. So it's a series of power on and power off. But over a distance, this looks more like this, where it has this rough look of what originally was, but there's interference. So it becomes harder and harder to read the farther distance it goes out. There's interference that can happen, which might look kind of jiggly as it goes along, and so what happens is that if you go too far of a distance, it becomes unreadable for that other piece of equipment.
So what a repeater does is it takes in this signal before it weakens too much and then reconstructs it to go out the other side. It just repeats it - just like the name suggests, it repeats it. So then it has a clean signal going out the other side, and this extends our network.
I wanted to show you a real-world example of a repeater and how they're used. What I'm going to do is open up a Chrome here and just type in fiber repeater in ocean, and let's take a look at one of these images here. Here I can see a fiber repeater that's under the ocean. We've got these really long distances in the ocean, and so we need repeaters now and then. In fact, this graphic is actually showing you the repeaters as it repeats from one continent to another. So that's a pretty massive scale. Obviously there's smaller repeaters also that we can use within our networks, but this is just one example of a repeater and how it's used.
