What Is a Network Node?

What do a printer, a laptop, switches, and routers all have in common? Well, they're all network nodes.

We have our network media, which in this case, let's say, are all copper lines that are interconnecting all these devices. So that's our network media. Well, anything that we're connecting together with this network media, those are all nodes. So these are the nodes within this network.

End Devices and Intermediary Devices

When it comes to network nodes, we essentially have two different types. We have end devices. These are the source or destination of traffic, so end devices would be our computers, our laptops, our servers. Our intermediary devices are those that help us interconnect these devices. So these would be the intermediary devices that help interconnect and facilitate the communication back and forth.

So these are all examples of nodes, and the nodes over here on this side are our end devices: our laptop, our printer, our tablet. These are all devices that are the source or destination of the communication, and so these are what we are actually performing these functions on, versus this over here, which is the intermediary devices. These intermediary devices were designed just to interconnect our end devices. So these are what nodes are.
