About this video

Networking concepts can be easier to grasp when tied to a consistent real-world scenario, and this content uses a fictional DJ business called Techno DJ for exactly that purpose. The business has already secured a domain and has a clear goal: attract new clients by letting them stream music through a custom app installed on their computers. That setup creates a straightforward client-server model that serves as the foundation for exploring how networks are built and how data moves across them. On the technical side, a repurposed desktop machine acts as the server, responsible for hosting and streaming audio files. The client-side application connects to that server and delivers the music to end users. Two separate programs are needed — one running on the server, one installed on the client machine — making this an accessible but realistic example of how distributed applications function in a networked environment. Throughout the content, this DJ business scenario is used to connect abstract networking principles to decisions that have tangible purpose: choosing the right infrastructure, enabling communication between machines, and supporting real user interactions. Rather than treating networking in isolation, the scenario keeps the focus on how technical choices serve a broader goal.

One of the things that's helpful when we're learning new information is to be able to tie information together with real-world application. So let's come up with a little scenario that we're going to use for this module, so we can start tying this information and learning the information in with some sort of context and application to it.

The scenario

Our scenario is that we're starting a business, a DJ business, and we're going to call it Techno DJ. Our plan is to play at the big venues all around town, and so we need to showcase our work. We already purchased the domain technique.com, and we plan on using it to start showcasing our work.

We need to start getting some momentum towards our DJ business. We need to get people excited about our music. So we want our end users to be able to play our music. Our marketing idea is to create our own app. It's an app that the end user will install on their computer so they can start streaming our songs and get interested in our music. Since these are clients that we're going to eventually sell to, let's just call this the client.

The setup

We have an old machine that's sitting around. It's just a desktop machine, and it's not serving much purpose right now. And so what we're going to do is we're going to turn that into our server, at least initially. So essentially we have to create two programs. One of them is an app that's on the client machine, and a service that will be installed on the server, so that way it can start streaming music from the server to the client.

And in the end, the more people that know about our music and love our music, the more chances that we'll get to play in the big venues around town. That's our scenario. So now let's start building a network that helps support our scenario.
