An address that matches the all-zeros host portion is a network address, and one with all-ones in the host portion is a broadcast address — neither is assignable to a host. Addresses in the experimental range, for example, are reserved by standards bodies and should never appear in operational networks. Key terms

IP Address
A numerical label assigned to each device connected to a network that uses the Internet Protocol.
Subnet Mask
A 32-bit number that divides an IP address into network and host portions.
Network Address
The first address in an IP network range that identifies the network itself and cannot be assigned to a host. It is formed when all host bits are set to zero.
Broadcast Address

We're going to go through and identify whether an address is a usable host address or not. This is once again one of those that I've seen on certification tests, so it's helpful to know and really get this down.

In this exercise for the usable host, you're just going to answer yes or no, and if they answer no you can put in there why.

So I'm going to take a look at this first address. Is this a usable host? The process that I would use for it is, once again, this is a Class B. I know that from the first octet. Because it's a Class B, the first two octets designate the network portion of this address. So I know that this is not a network address, because I don't see zeros here. I know this is not a broadcast address, because I would see 255.255 for the host portion. There's no other special element to this address right here, so I'm going to write in that yes, this is a usable host.

Then I take a look at this next one. It starts out with a 241. The 241 I know is in that experimental range, so because of that, that's not an address that I want to use. So I'm going to put no in there, and I'll just make a note that it's because it's in that experimental range.

Go through and answer all these questions, and then you can check your work to see how well you did. Check to make sure you got everything correct. If not, continue to practice until you really feel comfortable at this before proceeding.
