About this interactive
A web filter must see the traffic between the client and the web server, and the lesson describes four ways to arrange that.
Agent-based: software installed on each machine checks where the user is going and decides. It keeps filtering when the machine leaves the office.
Proxy server: each machine's settings send its web traffic to a server that fetches pages on its behalf and can check them, for malware too. The firewall blocks direct web traffic, so the proxy cannot be skipped.
Monitor mode: nothing stands in the path. A switch sends the filter a duplicate of each request, and if the site is not allowed the filter replies first with a block page made to look like the site's answer; the real reply arrives late and is dropped. If the filter goes offline, browsing carries on.
Inline: the filter sits in the path and every request passes through it, so it is hard to get around, but if it fails, browsing stops. Many firewalls now include filtering of their own.
