About this interactive
The lesson's pieces, from the inside out:
- **DTE** (data terminal equipment): the router, at Layer 3.
- **DCE** (data communications equipment): the modem, CSU/DSU or optical converter on the customer premises that handles the line's timing and Layer 1 signaling. All-in-one home boxes combine the two; a modem in bridge mode passes Layer 2 and up to the router.
- **Demarcation point**: where the provider's responsibility ends and the subscriber's begins, often a jack in the MDF. The provider tests up to it.
- **Local loop**: the last mile, from the demarcation point to the central office, in copper, coax or fiber.
Everything on the subscriber's side is customer premises equipment (CPE).
