About this interactive
From the lesson:
- **VTP shares VLAN lists between switches.** It is not trunking: a trunk carries VLAN traffic, VTP copies VLAN definitions.
- **Server:** where VLANs are created, changed and deleted. Each change raises the configuration revision number and is advertised.
- **Client:** applies an advertisement from its own domain when the revision number is higher than its own, and passes it on. You cannot create VLANs on a client.
- **Transparent:** forwards advertisements but never applies them to its own list.
- **Domain:** a switch only listens to advertisements for its own domain. A switch with no domain name takes the first one it hears.
- **The risk:** a switch that rejoins the domain with a higher revision number, server or client, overwrites everyone's VLAN list. Reset it before you plug it back in.
What you'll learn
- Predict whether a VTP server, client or transparent switch changes its VLAN list, from its mode, its domain and the configuration revision number it hears
- Recognize the risk of a switch rejoining a VTP domain with a higher revision number than the rest

Key terms
- VLAN Trunking Protocol
VTP
- A Cisco proprietary protocol that manages the addition, deletion, and renaming of VLANs across a network.
- VTP Mode
- The operational role assigned to a switch in VTP, either server, client, or transparent, which determines how the switch processes and propagates VLAN information.
- VTP Domain
- A named administrative boundary that groups switches together so they share and synchronize VLAN information via VTP advertisements.
- VTP Advertisement
- A message sent between VTP-enabled switches to propagate VLAN database information, including the management domain, configuration revision number, and updater identity.
- vlan.dat
- A file stored in a Cisco switch's flash memory that contains VLAN configuration data and must be deleted to fully reset the switch to factory defaults.
