About this interactive
The lesson's VPNs:
- **Site-to-site:** two fixed sites joined through the internet. The routers or firewalls at each end encrypt and tunnel the traffic between the networks; the PCs behind them need nothing, and it is cheaper than a leased line.
- **Client-to-site with IPsec:** a client installed on the user's machine tunnels at the network layer, so the machine acts as if it were on the office network: wide application support, strong authentication, medium complexity.
- **Client-to-site with SSL/TLS (clientless):** the user connects through a web browser over HTTPS. Nothing to install and low complexity, but limited to what the browser can reach.
With a split tunnel, a client sends only office traffic through the VPN and the rest straight to the internet.
What you'll learn
- Choose the VPN for a remote access need: site-to-site, client-to-site with an IPsec client, or client-to-site with SSL/TLS in a browser
- Weigh what each offers: a whole office joined with nothing on its PCs, full network access through an installed client, or quick browser access with limited application support

Key terms
- Site-to-Site VPN
- A VPN configuration that connects two fixed network locations through an encrypted tunnel over the internet, allowing them to communicate as a single network.
- Client-to-Site VPN
- A VPN configuration that allows individual client devices using software to securely connect to a remote private network.
- Clientless VPN
- A VPN implementation that uses a web browser and SSL/TLS to provide remote access without requiring dedicated VPN software on the user's device.
- IPsec
- A suite of protocols that authenticates and encrypts IP packets to provide secure communication over a network.
- Transport Layer Security
TLS
- A cryptographic protocol that provides secure communication over a network, successor to SSL.
- Virtual Private Network
VPN
- A technology that creates a secure, encrypted tunnel over a public network to protect data in transit.
