About this interactive
What you are doing: deciding whether each case is a VM escape or resource reuse.
Virtualization runs many virtual machines on one piece of hardware, through a hypervisor. They share the same host, and the same CPU, memory and storage.
VM escape: one machine uses a flaw in the hypervisor or the hardware to break out of its own VM and reach the host or another machine. The lesson calls the hypervisor the common thread that makes this more of a concern with virtual machines.
Resource reuse: one machine uses a block of memory or storage, then gives it back. If it is handed to another machine without being cleared, that machine can read what was left there. Nothing broke out; the data was passed along.
Both apply in the cloud too, above all in infrastructure as a service, where tenants share the provider's hosts.
How to use it: ask whether the attacker broke through a boundary, or simply read leftovers it was given. A wrong answer resets your streak and shows the right bin; land five in a row to finish.
