About this interactive
Any two parties doing business should have a legally binding agreement. The lesson names three kinds.
Terms of service: when you sign up for an online service, you accept its standard terms, often by ticking a box. The provider writes them, they are the same for every customer, and they are the binding agreement between you.
An individual contract: when you hire a contractor for one engagement, a contract sets out that job, for that period.
A master service agreement (MSA): when you will use the same provider again and again, writing a long contract for each job wastes time. An MSA sets the standing terms for the whole relationship once, and each job then runs under it, usually through a statement of work. It is usually written by the service provider, signed by both sides, and protects both. No law requires one, but customers and frameworks often do.
To choose, ask how the service is bought and how often: a standard online service you sign up for, a single job, or a stream of work with the same provider.
