About this interactive
A SIEM (from the Monitoring and Alerting module) collects security logs and events from across the organization, normalizes and stores them where they cannot be tampered with, correlates them and raises alerts. Its job is to see and detect.
Security orchestration, automation and response (SOAR) is software for managing the response itself, which the lesson calls a very stressful time.
Orchestration is planning and coordinating. Customer support, the incident response manager, technicians, stakeholders and customers all need to know different things at different times. SOAR workflows flag what has to happen and when, such as an update that is due.
Automation makes steps run by themselves. The lesson's example is escalation: instead of texting, emailing and calling people by hand, someone marks the incident escalated and the SOAR sends every message at once. Running a playbook step, like isolating a laptop or pulling a phishing email from every inbox, is the same idea.
SOAR also brings data from many systems into one place for the response. A quick test: is the job spotting the problem, or running and coordinating what happens next?
