About this interactive
Security operations is the day-to-day work of keeping the company safe: the procedures followed, the controls run and the decisions made. A security program gives that work its structure, with policies and procedures, technology, people and a budget.
SecOps, as the lesson uses the word, goes one step further. It is a way of working borrowed from DevOps: the security team and everyone else in the business work on security together. Every control security rolls out changes how other people do their jobs. Decided and rolled out by security alone, a control can get in the way, people push back or work around it, and the control becomes a barrier instead of a protection.
So SecOps looks like this: asking the people affected how they work before choosing a control, trying it with them before it goes live, scheduling changes around their work, and explaining why a rule exists and what to do instead. Security alone looks like a change that simply arrives, decided without the people it affects.
Every situation on these cards appears twice, once each way. Read how the change is being made, not what the change is.
