About this interactive

A programmable logic controller (PLC) is a key part of many industrial control systems. It sits on the factory floor and delivers the control data to the equipment. It is programmed to carry out a function, then gives the individual devices their instructions, cycle after cycle. A SCADA system sits above the PLCs. It communicates with them, collects their data, and directs their day-to-day tasks, for example by sending a new setpoint or recipe. It is where operators see and supervise the whole process. To sort a card, ask whether the job is direct control of the equipment in front of the controller, or supervising and coordinating many controllers from the center.
