About this interactive
A risk assessment looks at all the risk to a business, analyses it and ranks it, and its end result is a report the company can act on. The Risk Assessment lesson, like Security+, names four ways to time one.
One-time: a single assessment, done once to find what to fix and what to tackle first, with no plan to repeat it.
Recurring: run on a schedule, such as yearly or quarterly. A full security operation needs this. Monthly is rare, because a full assessment takes a lot of effort.
Ad hoc: run or updated when something prompts it, outside the schedule. A customer asks for an updated report, a new threat appears, or the team spots a new risk between reviews.
Continuous: monitoring tools keep adding to and adjusting the assessment as things change, so it is never finished.
A quick test: is there a calendar (recurring), a trigger (ad hoc), a constant feed (continuous), or just the once (one-time)?
The lesson also notes that vulnerability management feeds into the risk assessment: scan and test results become part of it.
