About this interactive
The lesson's scenario: a busy database with a 15-minute RPO, too big to copy in full during the week.
The plan: a full backup that starts Friday evening and runs through the weekend; a differential every weeknight, Monday to Thursday; and incrementals every 15 minutes through the working day.
To restore, start from the full. Then restore the latest differential taken before the target time, because each differential holds every change since the full. Then restore each incremental taken after that differential, up to the target.
Say a bad patch means going back to 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Restore the weekend full, then Tuesday night's differential (Wednesday night's is too late), then each of Wednesday's incrementals up to 3 p.m.
The lesson adds one caveat: the archive bit cannot run this plan, because the incrementals would clear bits the differentials need, so it takes backup software that tracks changes itself.
