About this interactive
You never talk to the kernel directly. You work through the shell: software that sits on top of the kernel and gives you a way to operate the computer. A shell is either a command line, where you type commands, or a graphical user interface (GUI), where you click icons and menus.
On Windows the graphical shell is Windows Explorer, a program called explorer.exe. It draws the desktop, the icons on it and the taskbar, and File Explorer windows run inside it too. Because it is just a program, you can stop it and start it again, which is a real fix when the taskbar or desktop freezes.
The lesson does it the long way so you can see the shell go: open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), find Windows Explorer, and end it. The taskbar and icons disappear, because the program that drew them has stopped. Then use Run new task, type explorer.exe and click OK, and they come back. Task Manager also has a Restart option for Windows Explorer that does both steps at once.
All seven steps are presented every run: a procedure with a step taken out is not a shorter version of it, it is a broken one.
