About this interactive
The lesson compares the three on cost, time and data.
Hot site: a whole duplicate, with live data, live servers and the database running. Failover is fast, with virtually no downtime and very little data loss. It is the most expensive, about twice the cost.
Cold site: little or none of the equipment, or just the site planned out. It can take days to get equipment in place and restore the data, and data shipped there less often means more data lost. It is the least expensive.
Warm site: in between. Some servers and the internet link are in place and copies of the data are shipped over, so recovery means restoring the data and starting the databases.
Pick the cheapest site that still meets the need: the downtime and the data loss the business can accept.
