About this interactive

What you are doing: deciding whether each attack is ransomware. The lesson’s pattern: ransomware holds data for ransom. It encrypts the victim’s files so they cannot be opened, and the only way back is the decryption key, which the attacker gives only if the victim pays. Like a kidnapper holding a person or stolen property, the leverage is that the attacker controls the release. How to use it: look for the pattern. Is the data encrypted so the owner is locked out, with the key held for payment? If yes, ransomware. Stealing a copy, deleting files, flooding a site or frightening someone into buying a fake fix are other attacks. A wrong answer resets your streak.
