Race Condition or Not?

Is each finding a race condition?

⚑ Complete this interactive to capture a CTF flag worth 5 points.

About this interactive

What you are doing: deciding whether each finding is a race condition. A race condition happens when more than one task uses the same resource at once, and the gap between the time a value is checked and the time it is used, the TOCTOU gap, lets the value change in between. A result comes out wrong, or an attacker fires requests into the gap to be served more than once. It is about timing and shared state, not about input, memory size or file paths. How to use it: ask whether a gap between a check and a use, or two tasks touching one value, is what went wrong. Injection, overflows, replay, scripting, traversal, deserialization, floods and phishing are other attacks.

2.3 Explain various types of vulnerabilities.

Key terms

Race Condition
A software vulnerability that occurs when a system's behavior depends on the timing or sequence of events — an attacker who can manipulate the window between a time-of-check and a time-of-use can alter the outcome in their favor.
Time of Check to Time of Use
TOCTOU
Time of Check to Time of Use is a race condition vulnerability where a resource's state is verified at one moment but changes before it is actually used, allowing attackers to substitute malicious content in the intervening window.
Vulnerability
A weakness in a system, application, or process that can be exploited by a threat actor.
