About this interactive
Without a proxy, the browser builds one TCP session straight to the web server. With a proxy, there are two: one from the client to the proxy, and one from the proxy to the server. That degree of separation is what lets a proxy work for its users.
The lesson highlights three jobs. Content filtering: the proxy checks each request against the rules before it fetches anything, and it can scan what comes back for malware. Blocking all other web traffic at the firewall makes everyone use it. Anonymity: the proxy makes the outside connection, so the site sees the proxy's address, not the one your network is NATted to. Caching: the proxy stores what it fetches, so the next user who asks for it gets the local copy, faster and without crossing the internet again.
A reverse proxy protects servers instead, and it is the next module's topic.
