About this interactive
A big cloud provider gives you all the redundancy in the world inside it: regions, zones, managed services. It all still sits on that provider's backbone.
The lesson's SaaS company ran in AWS's Oregon region with failover to Virginia. When Virginia had a six-hour problem, services that leaned on S3 there went wrong too, because everything was part of the same provider.
Provider redundancy spreads the service across more than one provider: AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud as infrastructure as a service; colocation, where you rent space and run your own equipment; or on-premises equipment you control yourself. The lesson's example runs in colocation, fails over to a cloud provider, and keeps on-premises servers as the last fallback.
