About this interactive
The lesson follows the power path in its own rack.
Power supplies: each storage unit has two, so one can fail.
Power distribution units (PDUs): each of the two supplies plugs into a different PDU, one on each side of the rack, so a whole PDU can be lost.
UPS: each PDU goes back to a different uninterruptible power supply, on different circuits. A UPS is battery backup that takes over instantly when utility power drops.
Generator: when the utility goes out, the backup generator starts. It takes about five seconds or more to spin up and take over, which would be an outage on its own. The UPS bridges that gap, then the generator carries the load for as long as the outage lasts.
To sort a card, ask where the problem was and how long it lasted.
